Personal Author Biography

On the surface level, my life appears very much like that of the typical white suburban male and in the ways of privilege, I’ve experienced much. But through the years I’ve also experienced significant pain and trauma, from a home embroiled with constant conflict and verbal hand grenades, to sexual abuse, substance abuse, hospital visits and suicide attempts. For so long, my escape has been writing. In elementary school I was lucky enough to participate in a gifted and talented program which placed a lot of focus on creative expression, particularly through writing. I began to weave tales that impressed my peers and teachers and formed an identity around the concept. When turmoil really grew high in my life during high school, poetry became a solace, spending time every night secluded under the stars scribbling poems into the notes on my phone. Eventually I had enough to create a collection, which in retrospect, I don’t fully enjoy, entitled Celestial Images. When I began to attend Texas A&M University, I enrolled in poetry classes as electives, and through these classes met other young writers, including a group of slam poets who performed at a local bar every Sunday. I began to perform as well, occasionally performing rap verses – perhaps to your surprise. I left Texas A&M University but my love for writing never departed. Southern New Hampshire University gave me an option to go to school online, in a creative writing program, while I work at a local high school. In the program, I wrote a small collection called I Am Growing and My Memories are Flowers, which I enjoy quite a bit more than my first work. In the near future, I hope to submit works to be published in magazines.
